How to pick a theme

  • Start from what the birthday child already plays with — animals, colors, a favorite story shape — then name the theme by type, not by brand.
  • Choose a theme you can decorate with two colors and one shape; that keeps the shopping list short and the table clear.
  • Plan one food and one game that match the theme and keep everything else plain — the photos will still read as themed.
  • Generic themes also age well: balloons or a sports day work for a first birthday and a tenth alike.
